1

Shield of Brassasas Whenever you get hit you can use your reaction to inflict 1d10 fire damage. The shield is made of Brass and get fiery when you feel like fighting. It was made by a magical blacksmith ferret called Pil from the plane of fire, the shield has ornamented wings because Pil liked Doves.

2

Flash Shield Twice per day you can activate this shield, causing a large flash. Anyone 5 feet in front of you must make a DC 13 con save or be stunned for 1 round.

This piece was commissioned years ago by a zealous city guard member who was obsessed with being 'tactical'. I'm pretty sure he was shot through the head with a crossbow while raiding an old warehouse.

3

Flesh Shield This shield is made from stitched together bone and flesh from those its wielder slays. Formerly owned by a lich's favorite guard, the necrotic energy present allows this shield to magically harvest spare parts from the fallen.

Flesh Shield gains +1 AC (Max at +3), in addition to the AC granted by the base shield, for each entity slain by its wielder. AC is granted as soon as the entity dies if within 5ft or as soon after as the wielder passes within 5ft. Bonuses reset after a short rest as the extra stitched on material falls off in decaying chunks.

4

Mori Memento The current and only possessor of this silver magical shield is the Halfling warrior, Erin Maceswing; a muscular brute who wears her shield over her back shrouded by her cloak.

Indeed, she only ever brings out this magical shield when she particularly despises her opponent. When she uncovers it, her opponents are presented with a chilling animated visage of someone evidently in their death throes. Disturbingly, that image is of Maceswing’s last opponent at the moment of their demise.

Whenever the possessor of the Mori Memento kills an opponent in combat, her opponent’s ally take -1 penalty on attack rolls, cumulatively. As an action, the possessor of the shield can brandish the image in the direction of an opponent menacingly once per encounter, and the target must make a wisdom save (DC 12) or suffer the shaken condition for 1d4 turns.

5

Shield of flesh +2 shield (adds 4 to AC) - whenever a blow hits the shield, you loose 1 AC from the shield (if your AC without it is 19, then anything that's a 20+ and misses, hits your shield). The shield is rejuvenated if you take a long rest OR you can increase the AC by 1, up to it's max, for each humanoid you butcher to repair it over a short rest.

6

Buckler +1 against piercing damage, -1 against slashing.

7

Shield of Stone +2 shield, -10 ft of movement.

8

Tower shield you can use for 3/4 cover (or spell it out as +5 to AC on ranged attacks, so there's no confusion).

9

The Ishlangu of the Displacer The artisan who created this item was a warrior in his own right, felling a displacer beast with his own spear and harvesting its hide himself. The hide was carefully and ritually treated to preserve its magical qualities and imparted with the blessing of the artisan’s ancestors before being mounted on a wooden spine.

By virtue of this process, the shield can now bend light, making the quick warrior equipped with it difficult to pinpoint. Warriors who possess the shield often paint the hide to give their opponents a chance for fair combat, but when they are still, as they are while serving as sentries for their settlements, they become practically invisible.

Any melee or ranged attack directed at the warrior while the shield is equipped has a 25% miss chance. The shield imparts a +2 resistance bonus on saves against magical attacks.

10

The Maw of Dionaxis An iron shield that is wrought like the gaping maw of a dragon. The opening of the dragon's mouth is deeper than the shield, stretching five feet into and extra-dimensional space, but anything not held in place inside the maw is ejected directly onto the floor. Objects held inside the maw are subject to high enough temperatures to melt metal within a few rounds.

The Maw can be lit magically with a command word and its fire burns as bright as a torch. Once per day, the shield can breathe fire as the dragonborn racial, but the shield cannot be re-lit until the next sunrise. The Maw can be used as a portable forge with the right accompanying tools and skills.

11

Shield of Sustenance Oddly concave on both sides, functions as normal shield, however, if placed down and the enchantment read aloud, once per day, a full platter of food (suitable for up to 4 adventures) will materialise on the shield, if there are any drinking vessels touching the shield when cast, they fill with wine.

The Gates of Heaven Dark souls inspired SET OF TWO Tower Shield COMBOOOOOOOOO. These shields depict a gated archway that would lead to a holy realm far up in the cosmos. They peak at 6 feet tall. They resist necrotic/radiant damage and draw necrotic damage to them, where the damage will merely dissipate on the golden gates. +2 AC but ONLY if dual wielded.

16

Bogwood Shield This Wooden shield forms a Roman Testudo shape style. It is made of Tree bark that has been compacted and preserved deep in the murk of swamps for potentially thousands of years because of the anaerobic conditions that resist decay. This shield smells swampy, but feels tough. Its size can vary based on the tree that it came from. This shield resists cold damage, fire damage (because of the high mineral content), and piercing damage, but is vulnerable to bludgeoning damage.

17

The BAT The BAT is an acronym for "Big Ass Tuba". This Shield is a Tuba. And it is big. It has strong straps fastened on it. The mouthpiece of the Tuba is conveniently positioned above the holding straps so it can be used and played simultaneously for bardic purposes.

Once per day, an action can be taken to prepare for a BATB which is an acronym for "Big Ass Tuba Blast". The wielder spends an entire action inhaling air, on their next action they can unleash into the mouth piece yo send a soundwave radially that has a range of 30 feet. All non deaf creatures are hit. It deals 4d6 thunder damage and each creature that hears this must make a save or else they will be deafened. Structures also receive double damage AND ARE ALSO AUTOMATICALLY DEAFENED.

18

The Bat Cave Shield This is a tower shield of pure stone that has a massive dark cave in the centre (likely bag of holding type magic). Once per day the wielder can unleash a swarm of bats out at a target. At night, a bat familiar can come out and help the wielder.

19

The Refractor This Aspis type shield is made of a sort of glazed mirror metal. Whenever the user is attacked by a beam type spell from the front they can redirect part of it in another direction. They must make a save to do so and still take half the damage.

20

The Buckle Buckler This buckler shield is crafted by only the finest materials. It is truly exquisite. And it is also petite for a buckler shield, though this shield has 3 more uses besides defence. First, it can be used as a fancy belt buckle. But havent you ever wanted to just play some ultimate frisbee in the middle of a heated battle? If so, then youre in luck because you can make a persuasion check with another intelligent creature mid battle. If successful both you and the other creature spend the next turn frolicking and playing frisbee together (1/day). It also may be turned over and used as a plate to place tea on.

21

The Picket Fence literally a section of a picket fence. Provides +2 bonus to AC as usual, but makes the user vulnerable to fire damage.

25

The Shield of High Variance While equipped with this shield, you have a +3 to AC, and any attacker that rolls a 1 on the d20 must roll on the Wild Magic Table.

26

Shield of Holding A shield that also acts as a Bag of Holding. Of course, beating the crap out of a Bag of Holding is not recommended: After suffering 3d10 critical hits while using this shield, the Bag of Holding breaks, and all of the contents spills onto the ground.

27

The Scale of Og'leth the Devourer A black and purple scale of some enormous horror of the far realm.

(Requires attunment) Devour spell: When you become the target of a spell, you can use your reaction to make a charisma check equal to 10 + the spell's level. On a failure the spell resolves, on a success the spell is absorbed by the shield and gains a number of charges equal to the spells level, but the shield can only store a maximum of 5 charges safely.

If the shield ever absorbs enough energy to exceed 5 charges you must make a charisma saving throw equal to 10 + the number of charges over 5 the shield is. On a successful save the shield does nothing, but you must make the save again at the end of your next turn or the next time you use the Devour spell ability, but the save is increased by 1. On a failed save the shield deals 1d6 force damage per charge over 5 in a 10 ft radius centered on shield.

After the burst the shields charges drops back to 5. You can stop making saving throws if you expend enough charges to bring the shield back to 5 before you fail a save.

Eldritch hurl: As an action you can expend up to 5 charges to shoot a beam of raw arcane energy at a target within 60 feet, make a ranged spell attack equal to your charisma modifier + proficiency to deal 1d6 force damage per charge expended.

28

The Tortle's Rebuke An actual Tortle shell (or whatever giant turtle-man species fits your setting) turned into a huge shield. Most people think it distasteful, but inside the rim are the following words engraved: "In loving memory of an unsung hero. May he continue his dream of protecting the innocent."

29

The Mirror Buckler No matter how many blows it takes, it is flawlessly shiny.

30

Flora's Scutum The white and blue face depicts an incredibly intricate design depicting nymphs and flowers. The inside surface however, depicts scenes of demons torturing souls, and appears to be painted in blood.

31

The Chained Protector Looks like a triangular heater shield made of rusted iron, but it never seems to degrade and is incredibly endurable. Hanging from the bottom is a chained manacle that, when clasped over your wrist, imparts the memories of the saddest day experienced by the last person to wear it. There is no lock on the manacle, but it will stay clasped until a time when the wearer chooses to remove it. Upon doing so, they will find their self magically unable to pick up the shield or apply the manacle again.

32

Rooster's Heart Bronze small shield with the relief of a rooster on it. Grants its user immense courage.

33

The Holy Embrace a gilded kiteshield with the head of an angel engraved on it. +2 AC, it can be used to emit a flash of light 3 times a day on a command of the wielder. opponents get blinded in a 30 ft cone if they cant pass a wisdom saving throw of 16.

35

Spikeweavers Soul A roundshield sylvanized (magically shaped wood) from the heart of a treant, that has hardened over the centuries to a point where it is as hard as dragonscale. +2 AC and when worn, the user can use "shield bash" as a bonus action. It deals 1d4 + STR. modifier as piercing damage, rolled as a strength attack. when an enemy of same size or smaller is hit, it shoves it 10 ft back. When crit, the enemy falls down.

36

Magebane Shield Made from shell of the giant magebane crab, gives the user resistance to magic. In game terms, all magic damage from spells is halved and the user gains advantage on saves versus magic spells.

37

Shield of Desperation What appears from afar to be a small, round, and otherwise nondescript shield, is actually a waiter’s serving tray with leather straps hastily nailed into it. It only gives +1 AC, but in desperate times, the wielder can repurpose it as a frisbee that deals 1d4 bludgeoning damage. Anyone, regardless of shield proficiency, can wield the Shield of Desperation without penalties.

38

Not Your Shield A gigantic magical circular shield that can have the edges phase through walls or floors.

The central piece is a ring 4 feet in diameter, with a hollow center 2 feet in diameter. A magical plane extends 10 feet from this which resists projectiles and physical attacks. Requires two hands to wield. When wielded, this shield grants +2 AC to everyone within 10 feet and behind the shield, with the exception of the wielder.

The wielder can, as an action, perform one of the following

  • Bash: deals 1d6 bludgeoning damage
  • Ensnare: the wielder takes the ring, and shoves it over the limbs of a medium size creature. +3 to hit, the creature is considered restrained with a DC 15 check opposing them.

The shield does not provide armor class bonus while used as a restraining device.

39

The Big Icky When blocking a weapon, it can be used to get that weapon stuck, which also makes the shield unusable for the rest of the combat.

40

Phalanx a weakly enchanted steel shield. Grants the wielder the fighting style called “Protection” while in use. See PHB for details.

41

Framework shield this shield is constructed as just metal pipes conjoined into a shield like shape. It grants +3 AC to slashing attacks, but +1 AC to all other attacks

42

A Mimic Shield Somehow a mimic has decided that its best hiding place was on the arm of a great adventurer, developing a symbiotic relationship between the two. This shield will attempt to eat any weapon that strikes it, or if it is close enough, it will try to bite any creature that gets too close. Any being that uses a melee attack must then make a strength check DC 13 or lose their weapon.

The shield has 58 hp and will absorb half of total damage dealt. Is immune to acid damage.

43

Shield of Allseeing (Requires attunement) This is a circular shield with a carving of a closed eye in the middle. When flanked in combat the carrier can spin the shield to their rear and the eye will open. This negates any advantage the attackers may have for flanking, but reduces the carriers AC -2. Also adds expertise in perception.

44

The Panel of Grudges (Requires attunement) A large square stone slate with a mechanism on the back that clamps it onto an arm. The front is blank save for a pair of eyes chiseled onto its surface that eerily seem to follow anyone other than the owner if they get close.

Whenever a creature makes an attack against the shield’s wielder, but before the attack is confirmed, the wielder can use their reaction to Begrudge that creature. If the attack is confirmed as a miss, the creature still rolls damage as though they had hit, and the amount of damage rolled is instead added to the Panel’s Grudge Count. The shield’s eyes stay locked onto the attacking creature and glow with a red light, with the glow increasing brightness as the Grudge Count grows.

As an action, the wielder may make a spell attack with a +8 attack bonus to fire a ray of solid red light from the shield at the Begrudged creature so long as they are within 30 feet of the wielder. On a hit, the creature takes force damage equal to the Grudge Count and is knocked 5 feet away from the Panel’s wielder for every 10 damage dealt.

If ray is fired or the wielder is attacked by a creature other than the Begrudged one, the shield stops glowing and its Grudge Count is reset to 0. The wielder can only have one Begrudged creature at a time; Begrudging a creature removes the Grudge on any other creature and resets the the Grudge Count to 0.

The Panel of Grudges is the final, masterwork creation of the long-dead Dwarf blacksmith Garvel Rockwrought. Having been exiled from his clan on faulty charges, the ancient artisan grew bitter and hateful of his once-family and channeled all his emotions into one last work that would surpass all his others.

Such was the strength of his anger that it soaked the shield, giving it unique magic and a basic consciousness. The shield grew into an simplistic intelligence and an ability to communicate through emotions, taking on a personality not dissimilar to its maker. However, a price is always extracted in order for such powerful magics to take place. Upon finishing his work, Garvel was drained of all the emotion that fueled him, leaving him a passionless shell of his former self.

His last few days were spent in grim satisfaction, gazing into the eyes of his creation before finally wasting away. The newly formed Panel of Grudges lay waiting in the obscure cave it was forged in for decades after Garvel’s death, wrestling with a combination of quiet sorrow and burning rage until it was eventually found and sold by wandering adventurers. It has passed through the hands of many owners over the years, all of them too uncomfortable with the overflow of negative emotions to hold onto it for very long.

The Panel of Grudges is a sentient true neutral shield with an Intelligence of 7, a Wisdom of 18, and a Charisma of 5. It has darkvision out to a range of 120 feet and blindsight our to a range of 30 feet. The shield communicates by transmitting emotions, sending a painful jolt through the wielder’s arm when it wants their attention. It can communicate more expressively, through dreams when the wielder is asleep or in a trance, or through visions and monologues in moments of great sorrow or resentment.

The shield’s only goals are:

  • to have the body of Garvel Rockwrought receive a proper grand funeral
  • have his former clan severely punished in some way or another for their folly, and
  • to eventually find a worthy wielder willing to stay with the shield in spite of its permanently spiteful outlook.

If all these are completed, the Panel of Grudges mellows out and becomes capable of feeling contentedness and somber happiness, becoming completely devoted to the wielder who fulfilled its dreams and upgrading itself as a result. The shield then grants an additional +1 to AC, has its Intelligence changed to 12 and its Charisma changed to 10, and has its attack bonus to the red ray of solid light increased to a +12. Additionally, the Panel’s Grudge Count increases by half the damage taken even if a Begrudged creature’s attack lands, and the Grudge Count is no longer reduced to 0 if an attack from a creature that isn’t Begrudged doesn’t hit.

45

The Razor Edged Shield A shield with a razor sharp blade for a rim.

46

The Platter (requires attunement) This large wooden buckler can be sprung to life with two small claps. It sprouts 4 legs and functions as if created by the tiny servant spell. If it is "killed" it cannot be activated again until the next dawn, and as an act of passive aggression, it will spill the next drink or plate of food it carries.

47

Aegis of Lankhmar (requires attunement) Forged by a master blacksmith in a long forgotten city, the Aegis of Lankhamr is made from purified mithryl, and imbued with magical wards that absorb magic directed towards it.

Whenever the Aegis is readied and magic is directed towards the holder, the wielder can make a DEX saving throw (DC 14). On a success, the spell targeting the user has half the effect it would have had otherwise (i.e. a firebolt that would have dealt 8 damage now deals 4).

48

Shield of Remembrance (Requires attunement) A well made but unremarkable looking wooden shield. Structurally it is comprised of six pieces of wood in total, cut circularly and bound with iron along its circumference. It sports an iron boss in the centre of the face.

This is your typical wooden city guard / viking shield. What makes it unique, is that on the inside of the shield there is a short list of names scratched into the wood (names and language script are DM's discretion). When the bearer of the shield is involved in a combat where any ally falls (NPCs and PCs alike), that ally's name appears added to the list. If the shield-bearer utters a small prayer for the fallen, utters an oath of vengeance, or otherwise makes a verbal show of emotion regarding their ally falling in battle, they may make attacks against the opponent or opposing force in the combat who felled them with a bonus.

It is at the DM's discretion whether this bonus applies to a single opponent, or the whole opposing side, as well as the nature of the bonus. Such a bonus may take the form of simple advantage, a barbarian's rage, or perhaps a Bane or Hunter's Mark spell. Any potential bonus may only work if the shield-bearer is aware of who is responsible for their ally's death. Additionally, if a comrade who shares a significant bond with the shield-bearer (spouse, adventuring party member, etc...), but is not currently travelling with them, meets their end in any way, despite not being with the shield-bearer at the time their name will appear on the list as well.

49

Laser Shield Like a light saber but a shield. Whenever a non-magic weapon touches this shield, it gets destroyed (unless it is too big like a canon ball).

This shield fell from a spaceship and travelled a tremendous distance to get to this planet. The technology in the shield detects when the attack is coming and turns itself on automatically, otherwise it remains off and cannot be used offensively. The shield does this to conserve energy because it is unable to adequately recharge. It can only recharge itself enough to block, but maybe it's possible to restore this shield to its former glory...

50

Shield of Blades You can magically draw from this shield up to 8 knives, 1 short sword and 1 long sword. They have this gloomy blue aura in them and simply disappear after a few minutes and get back to the shield.

51

Shield of Inspiration By hitting your weapon into your shield and screaming something to inspire your allies, all of them get 1d8 + your CHA mod to their next attack, 1d8+your cha mod to their next save and 1d20+ your cha mod as temporary HP.

You can only use this shield effect a number of times equal to your CHA mod, and after it is transferred to someone else you can never use the effect again.

52

The Indestructible Shield of the Dragon A +1 shield that can never be destroyed, except when the DM feels like rising the tension by destroying the previously indestructible shield. The shield can be restored with 10 liters of knights blood mixed with stardust. The shield is also small enough that can be used in the arm instead of hand.

53

Shield of Magnetism ANY attack that target someone 5ft from you that involves metal is targeted at you instead.
