Magical quills, pens, and writing implements (d100)

Magical quills, parchments, inks, and other things you might find in a wizard's desk, an enchanted library, or a really weird stationery store.

This is a collaborative effort by the r/d100 community. The original post can be found here.

d100 Result Result

1

Plume des Noms

This magical quill remembers all signatures it has ever written and can reproduce them. Once per day, the quill can sign a stored signature.

2

Wyrmpen

(Requires attunement) This gold-plated cylinder has a fanciful dragon head at one end, and its nib is a bit of dragon's claw. The pen has three powers, but only one may be used before the pen must recharge; the pen recharges after a long rest.

  1. The pen can be used as a normal writing implement, but the user gets advantage on calligraphy checks.

  2. The pen can be commanded to write down brief notes of what its master experienced that day. (This consumes one sheet of parchment, scroll, vellum page, handkerchief, or so on. If no paper is available but the command is given, the pen will write on the floor, a boot, a hand, or whatever surface is nearby.) Later, assuming the character still has the notes, he or she can review them and get advantage on memory checks concerning incidents from that day.

  3. Alternately, the dragon's head can be commanded to use its "breath weapon"; a 10-foot cone of ink. Creatures in the cone (whether allies or enemies) must succeed at a DC 11 DEX save or be covered in ink, and are blinded until they expend an action wiping the ink from their faces.

3

Quill of Rage

Will only write after you scribble in the corner.

4

Feather for the Featherbrain

A feathered cap whose feather is a quill that can, without a source of ink, write up to five pages of notes. The feather disappears after an hour; during a short rest, a new feather grows from the cap. Made by a wizard for his forgetful apprentice who would always lose or forget his pen.

5

Porcuquill

It appears to be an ordinary if unusual writing quill, made of a bundle of stiff but pliable hair and tipped with a rather sharp nib. When a command word is spoken, the quill stiffens and can be used as a dagger. Favored by multi-classed scribe/assassins.

6

Ink of Forgetting

This foul-smelling blue-black ink is made from the rendered brain of an Intellect Devourer. Anything written using this ink is immediately forgotten by the author. Perfect for the memoirist who is ashamed of his past.

7

Quill of Compulsion

If a contract is signed using this raven's feather quill, the signer is compelled to abide by the terms of the contract or suffer the effects stipulated by the contract (works as per the spell Bestow Curse).

8

Quill of the Stranger's Hand

This feather quill appears quite ordinary, but anything written with it appears in a distinct, legible, but unfamiliar handwriting, as if written by a stranger. This unknown handwriting remains the same, regardless of who is writing with the quill.

9

Voynich Quill

This feather quill appears quite ordinary, but anything written with it appears in a distinct, legible, but completely incomprehensible language, even to the writer. Each time it is used, a new language is generated, making all attempts at translation impossible.

10

Dictapen

A levitating quill that writes whatever words are spoken by the last person who touched it. The quill stops writing when it runs out of parchment, ink, or it is touched again. Created by an artificer after his novelist father lost feeling in both of his hands after a wall collapsed on him.

11

Vellum of Sending

Two sheets of fine vellum. Whatever is inscribed on one sheet simultaneously appears on the other sheet, as long as the other sheet is on the same plane. If one sheet is turned over, the "face down" side becomes blank, and also erases what is on the other sheet. If one sheet is destroyed, the other crumbles into dust.

12

Fountain Pen of Youth

This ornate metal pen has a reservoir of ink inside. If you drink the ink, the effect is as a Potion of Longevity. Otherwise it's just an ordinary (but nice) pen. Once the reservoir of ink is depleted, it must be replaced with ordinary ink (or a Potion of Longevity if you have one).

13

Artist’s Quill

A white feather with a golden sheen and its tip is stained black with ink. When used to draw, the drawing will be incredibly beautiful regardless of the competence of the user. Can produce ink of any color.

14

Infinite Scroll

(Requires attunement) This very large roll of heavy vellum is wrapped around two wooden rollers, like a Sefer Torah; it weighs about 25 pounds. Once attuned, the vellum becomes blank for its new master, and the scroll can only be unwound by its owner. As long as it is intact, the scroll can be unwound seemingly forever. However, if it is torn or ripped, it crumbles into powdery dust. Highly prized by long-winded diarists and wizards who know a lot of spells.

15

Pen of the...

The barrel of this metal pen is engraved with the runes of one of the six known scripts, and the nib is made from the nail, tooth, bone, or horn of a creature associated with that particular script. Type of pen you've found: Resolve: {Celestial|Common|Draconic|Dwarvish|Elvish|Infernal}. For example, the Pen of the Dragon is made with a dragon claw. Anything written with the Pen of the Dragon, regardless of the language of the user, is automatically transcribed into Draconic script.

16

Blessed Stylus

(Requires attunement) This simple looking stylus was once used by a holy prophet to engrave the tenets of an ancient religion onto wax tablets; the tablets are long since lost and the religion forgotten, but the stylus still retains some of its divine benediction. Once per day, the owner can add a D4 to an attack roll or saving throw, as per the 1st level spell Bless.

17

Quill of After Thought

This feathered quill looks to have set of quizzical eyes across the plumage; at a glance it appears that they are looking back and forth to your writing and your face as it moves. Write a message of up to 20 words about a situation or a plan, let the quill go and it will offer helpful notes or criticisms about said plan. In a very judgmental tone.

18

Parchment of Deception

(Requires attunement) Once attuned, the owner of this parchment can cause it to appear as a tattered scrap of papyrus, a newly made sheet of vellum, or anything in between. Attempts to determine if what is written, inscribed, or drawn on the paper is genuine are at disadvantage. Once it is out of the owner's hand, the writing slowly fades; it will be blank again within 24 hours.

19

Inkwell of Endless Ink

This small crystal inkwell has an endless supply of lustrous but otherwise ordinary black ink. The inkwell has a small mouth (large enough only to accommodate the nib of a quill), so if tipped over, the ink will dribble out slowly but steadily. If smashed, the inkwell only contains about as much ink as you would expect from an inkwell of this size.

20

Magic Marker

This stick of chalk can be used to draw, write, or otherwise mark upon any surface. The marker is not consumed in this process. The markings are invisible except to anybody touching the marker, who sees the markings as bright and iridescent. The markings will vanish after a month or when targeted by a Dispel Magic spell. The markings are otherwise impossible to remove.

21

Qwerty's Clacking Contraption

This small metal chest weighs about 10 pounds. The hinged lid opens to reveal a series of buttons, each labeled with a letter. (Roll 2D6: 2 Infernal, 3 Celestial, 4-5 Common, 6-9 Dwarvish, 10-11 Elvish, 12 Draconic) There's a roller where one can add a piece of parchment, a small ink reservoir, and a ribbon. When a button is pressed, a metal arm with a wee character engraved on it strikes the ink-covered ribbon, marking that letter onto the parchment. (Yes, it's a manual typewriter as invented by a Gnome named Qwerty.)

22

Quill of Secrets

Appears to be an ordinary quill, at first. It fills with and dispenses ink as usual. However, the ink disappears as you write and there is no way to recover what is written... unless what you're writing on is a Book of Secrets. (Book of Secrets sold separately.)

23

Book of Secrets

Appears to be an ordinary book with no writing in it. However, it is impossible to leave any mark in the book, except using a Quill of Secrets. And even then, the writing isn't plainly visible... (Ink of Secrets sold separately.)

24

Ink of Secrets

Appears to be ordinary ink. However, it is impossible to leave any mark with it, except if using a Quill of Secrets while writing in a Book of Secrets.

25

Mightier Pen

Not only can it be used as a regular pen, the Mightier Pen can be used as a weapon (use stats as a dagger). When opponent swings a sword at the wielder, the wielder may, as a reaction, cause the sword to drop to the ground causing any attacks to miss entirely. This function does not work with other weapon types (like axes, hammers, maces, spears, etc.). This pen is truly mightier than the sword.

26

The Chalk of Rudolph Bartholomew Tabootie

A long piece of white chalk with faint glow. Using the chalk to draw a shape into stone or slate will create a portal into a pocket dimension. The pocket dimension has no other entrances or exits and the portal will last as long as the drawn shape stays continuous. If the shape is ever broken, the portal is shut off and the contents of the pocket dimension are contained inside. Each pocket dimension is tied to the piece of chalk and will maintain contents until the chalk runs out. It will then become inaccessible. It takes 1 action to draw a shape large enough to create a 3' sphere or cube; 2 actions to draw a 6' sphere or cube; and so on. (Note if you're drawing a 6' circle, for example, you don't get a 3' circle; you get a half-drawn 6' circle.) Each time, roll 1d20; on a 1, the chalk runs out.

27

Prankster's Pen

(Cursed) Any creature who reads writing made with this item, aside from the creature that wrote it, sees only an obscene word written repeatedly.

28

Ink Brush of the Ascendant

Characters scribed with this brush become become the basis of a new constellation in the sky. If the scribed paper is destroyed, so are the new stars. A character which reads the characters will have profound dreams of distant worlds, forgotten heroes, and dead gods. If the true name of a being is written, that being will be removed from the material plane and transformed into a constellation.

29

Candle of Concentration

While this candle is burning, the person who lit it will have the Deafened condition. This continues one hour or until the candle is blown out. After an hour of use, the candle can be lit again after a long rest.

30

Chisel of Inscription

Crafted by Dwarves, this chisel can be placed against any rock, mineral, or metal surface. A phrase of not more than 10 words can be spoken and when the chisel is struck once, the phrase appears inscribed in one-foot-high Dwarvish runes.

31

Tailor's Chalk

This is a flat piece of chalk with a bluish hue. When the chalk is used to draw a dotted line along a piece of fabric, it functions as if someone had taken a scissors following that line. If used against a fabric-based construct, it does damage as a dagger.

32

Ink of the Old One

A pot of blood tapped from the severed limb of an ancient aberration. Any text written using this ink rapidly re-configures into a script indecipherable to all but those who understand deep speech, are telepathic, or have truesight. These characters will hear the scripture on a constant loop, which approaches a conversational volume as they reach the source. A character which somehow imbibes the ink must roll once on both the short and long term madness tables.

33

Genie Pen

This red plume once belonged to a great genie adventurer and writer. He used this quill to author many of his works, and the spirit of his master craft is still imprinted on it. The writing this pen puts to paper is known for its style and quality across the planes. Anyone who uses the quill to make a performance check related to writing a novel, short story, or narrative of any kind gets advantage on their check, and any result below a 10 becomes a 10.

34

Dragonclaw Stylus

A finger armor ring made of steel with a bone tip. This ring writes by burning the medium with its heated bone tip. It does 1 point of radiant damage if used as a weapon (requires a successful to-hit roll.)

35

Quill-O'-Wisp

(Requires attunement) A quill trapping the spirit of a will-o'-wisp, it was once the property of a low-life necromancer. The Quill-O' Wisp has 1 hit point and can fly. It has all damage and condition resistances and immunities of a Will-O'-Wisp. The Quill-O'-Wisp writes misleading notes and directions, tricking their victims into lethal and dangerous situations. The quill feeds off the life force of the dying and desolate, and can use Consume Life as a bonus action-it can target one creature it can see within 1 feet of it that has 0 hit points and is still alive. The target must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw against this magic or die. The Quill-O'-Wisp can only be attuned by controlling the spirit within using Turn Undead, Charm, or a similar spell or ability. When attuned, the quill can either turn invisible or shed a dim light at will of the user and can pass through people and objects as if they were difficult terrain. The wielder can also use it to use Consume Life on a target within 1 foot range as a bonus action. A character who attempts to touch the quill without attuning is shocked for 1d8 damage.

36

Dreamscape Drafting Pencil

In most respects this writing implement resembles a mundane if well-crafted mechanical pencil. But the graphite lead has a metallic shimmer in the impression it leaves on paper. When a lucid dreamer attunes to the device, they discover that environs and domiciles they sketch before sleeping appear fully realized in their dreams. What more, characters that can cast spells that create demiplanes or shape dreamscapes find that their facility with those spells and its effects improve. For instance, when casting Create Demiplane, while casting time of the spell increases by an hour, the effective size of the plane doubles.

37

Pen of Portent

When you use this ordinary-seeming pen to write about an upcoming event, the words that actually appear on the page are in your handwriting, but they are not the words you intended to write; instead, the pen writes about the event in the past tense, as if written in a diary after the fact. But your fate isn't, no pun intended, written in stone; the events can unfold differently. But as you have an idea of what's going to happen, you can re-roll your next natural 1.

38

Quill of Illumination

(Requires attunement) Any text the quill is traced over will glow a fluorescent tone of yellow. A character attuned to the quill can study, translate, or interpret texts (including spellbooks) which have been illuminated in half the time.

39

Sailor's Char

A chunk of charcoal that cannot be washed off by water. However, markings made by this charcoal will slowly fade unless water is occasionally applied. Good if you need to make a map underwater.

40

Animator's Quill

(Requires attunement) Anything drawn or written with this iridescent quill can, if the artist chooses, become animated, as per the Minor Illusion cantrip.

41

Magic Tape

A spool of opaque fabric that's sticky on one side; you can rip off a piece to fix a break or tear in an object as per the Mending cantrip. Each time you use it requires a Dexterity check at DC 10 to get a piece unwound from the spool. On a roll of 1, you're out of tape.

42

Monocle of Comprehension

While this monocle is worn, the wearer can understand any written language, as per the spell Comprehend Languages. One page can be read per minute. After one hour, the monocle must be taken off and the wearer have a long rest before it can be worn again.

43

Ghost Touch Quill

This hollow spine ends with a wicked nib. It has a faint celestial glow, but has a unsettling feel to the touch. Its first home was a spiritualist seance table. The spiritualist would inscribe three questions on a parchment with his own blood, and the summoned spirit would be compelled to reply. The Ghost Touch Quill has the weird ability to be held by incorporeal creatures. The blood is a required ingredient to compel the spirit to respond (opposed Charisma check), but even without it, the inscribed text gains the attention of spirits. A Ghost Touch Quill can be used as a weapon against incorporeal undead but does so with meagre effect.

44

Pen of Noshing

This gnarled pen is made from the wood of an enchanted fruit tree. Once per day, the pen sprouts a single Goodberry from its non-writing end. If not consumed within 24 hours, the Goodberry rots.

45

Prisoner's Chalk

This piece of chalk can't be used to write or draw; it seemingly leaves no mark. But at sunrise each morning, it will rise from the floor and draw a short vertical line on the nearest wall. Every fifth day, it instead makes a slash through the four most recent marks.

46

Kindell's Library

(Requires attunement) This is a small but fat leather-bound book, just small enough to be stuffed into a pouch. Only the person attuned to it can open the book, and upon attunement, the book becomes blank. If the person attuned to it touches the book to a non-magical book or document, the contents of that book or document are absorbed by the book. It is said the great sage Kindell carried his entire library in his pocket.

47

Table of Contents

Place any book upon this small reading stand and speak a word or phrase. The book will open and the pages flip until the first occurrence of that word or phrase. Speak it again and the pages will turn to the next occurrence.

48

Put-Out Light

This black candle, when lit, casts darkness rather than light; all within a 15' radius are affected as if by the Darkness spell. However, the person who lit the candle sees as if they'd lit a normal candle. The candle can be snuffed out by normal means, or if left alone, will go out after one hour. Either way, it can't be lit again for 24 hours. Commissioned by a scholar who wanted to read at night without the light disturbing his roommate.

49

Acclamation Proclamation

This is a blank scroll of fine but worn vellum. Whatever you write upon this parchment is more likely to be favorably received. If someone other than the author reads aloud what is written upon it, he or she gets a +2 to his or her Persuasion or Performance check, as appropriate. But there is no effect if the author reads his own work.

50

Quill of Candor

Anything written with this quill must be truthful. The quill doesn't compel the user to write, but if s/he does write, whatever it is must be the truth (as s/he believes it to be).

51

Quill of Chicanery

Anything written with this quill must be deceitful. The quill doesn't compel the user to write, but if s/he does write, whatever it is must be a lie (or s/he believes it to be).

52

Mightier Sword

(Requires attunement) Once attuned, every time the user refers to it as a 'pen', 'quill', or similar, it transforms into a +1 scimitar, and every time s/he refers to it as a 'scimitar', 'sword', or similar, it transforms back into its quill form, fresh with ink. For the sake of shenanigans, there is no limit to how many people can attune to this item. Provided the current wielder is attuned, the blade will always be pointed away from the wielder whenever it transforms from quill to sword, regardless of the original facing of the pen. An un-attuned wielder has no such protections.

53

Revolutionary's Chalks

(Requires attunement) This clasped wooden box contains a set of colored chalks. Instructions for its magical use are found in a small booklet inside, including instructions for replacing the chalks should they be used up. An attuned user first draws something using the chalks, then speaks an activation phrase that causes all the chalks to return to inside the box. Later, the user can press any of the chalks to any surface, and speak the activation phrase again; the chalks will spring out of the box and recreate the drawing ten times as fast, to a minimum of ten seconds. If the user speaks the activation phrase after drawing anything else using these chalks again, the previously 'stored' drawing can no longer be recreated and is replaced by the new drawing.

54

Inkling

A tiny construct made out of shiny black and navy blue ink, swirling in the form of a broad-shouldered humanoid with a head tapering at its back like a xenomorph. Its lower body devolves into a cyclonic mass of liquid. This creature is true neutral, and will follow around the first person it 'sees'. Inklings can be found in libraries and scriptoria, and probably has a profile like a bogun (though, without eyes, it probably has something like blindsense). Inklings can be quite easily tamed by regularly feeding them ink. When tamed, inklings can be directed using languages used in the library it was found in, and they have the ability to erase or create written words in touch range (provided the words were produced by discoloration, such as words created by ink, chalk, paint, etc., and not by a method such as engraving). After each use of this ability, they have to be fed several drops of ink again.

55

Ring of Page Turning

While this ring is worn and a command word spoken, a spectral floating hand appears, as per the Mage Hand cantrip. However, the hand can only be used to gently turn the pages of a book. Useful for reading if your hands are dirty or the pages are delicate.

56

Reader's Portrait

This scroll has an elegant but otherwise unremarkable portrait of a man's face. If a text, such as a parchment or a book open to a page, is placed in front of the portrait, it will read the text aloud in a clear but droning monotone. The portrait responds to simple commands such as "start over", "stop", "rewind", and "forward." The face does not translate what it is reading; it reads in the language written, sounding like a native speaker. If a word is misspelled or incomplete, the word is pronounced phonetically. Once the face reaches the end of the page, it stops reading until someone turns the page or provides another text. It can read for one hour per day, and can read one page per minute. The face cannot read magical writing, such as spellbooks, scrolls, or glyphs.

57

Monocle of Magnification

While wearing this monocle, any writing you peer at appears to float about six inches above the surface, much larger than it originally appears. (This is an illusion that can be seen only by the person wearing the monocle.) When the monocle is removed, the illusion disappears. You may read one page per minute; after an hour, the monocle must be taken off and the user have a long rest before it can be worn again.

58

Light Orb

This orb is made of delicate glass. With a command word, it gives off illumination as per the Light spell; another command word turns it off.

59

Script Wand

Wave this wand over a surface, and whatever you are inscribing upon the air will appear on the surface, as if you had written it in lustrous ink with a fine quill. (If written on water or another liquid, the illustration or writing will be legible for a few moments before dissipating.) If written on a person, the ink can be scrubbed away, just as if someone had written on you with a pen. Range is five feet.

60

Zeroq's Mirror

Place a piece of parchment below this mirror, and another piece of parchment (face down) on top of it; whatever is inscribed on the top piece of parchment also now appears on the bottom piece of parchment. It only works on mundane pieces of paper, not scrolls or other enchantments; it doesn't work on butts either. The mirror is approximately 9 inches wide and 12 inches long.

61

Concealed Letter

Upon a command word, this piece of vellum folds itself into an envelope, seemingly with no openings. The author may designate either a person, a place, or a time; when that condition is met, the paper unfolds itself. If ripped or torn, the enchantment is destroyed and the message lost.

62

Pen of Pedantry

When you write with this pen, an illusion of squiggly red lines appears below text that is grammatically incorrect or misspelled. When the pen is put down, the illusion is dismissed.

63

Quill of Calculation

This raven's quill always writes the correct solution to a written equation comprised of basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage).

64

Seal of Certainty

This seal, once pressed into wax, creates a green aura around the letter if it has not been tampered with (opened and resealed). If a red aura appears this letter has been tampered with.

65

Tip of the Tongue

Instead of a nib, this pen has a bit of tongue, stained black from ink. It writes legibly if somewhat sloppily. While using this pen, you never need struggle to find that particular word; it always just comes to you.

66

Spyglass of Sketching

While peering through this spyglass, the user can draw with his other hand a rough but reasonably accurate sketch of whatever s/he sees (provided s/he has a writing implement and something to write on), even if s/he has no drawing ability. The scope of the sketch is limited to whatever can be seen through the field of view of a typical spyglass. It can be used once per day. What is drawn is whatever the user sees; that is, if the user sees an illusion, s/he draws the illusion; if there's a hidden door that hasn't been detected, it is not revealed by the drawing. The spyglass offers no protection from a medusa's gaze or similar vision-based calamities.

67

Poisoner's Pen

This pen is crafted of Kythrian manchineel wood. The first person who reads a message written with this pen must pass a Wisdom check at DC 15 or suffer the Poisoned condition.

68

Rainbow Brush

This fine horsehair artist's brush needs no paint; the artist need only speak a color aloud, and the brush will produce strokes of that hue.

69

Pocket Pen

A handy little writing implement that, when first discovered, is soft and pliable, easy to stuff into a pocket or a purse without fear of poking a hole in it (or you). But with a stroke of your fingers it stiffens into a rigid pen suitable for writing. An artificer created 14 versions of this pen with varying success, but hit it big with Pen15.

70

Portable Librarian

This is a tiny figurine of a humanoid. When a command word is spoken, the figurine grows to become a medium size automaton. It immediately begins to perform simple "librarian" tasks such as returning books to shelves, tidying up loose papers, refilling inkwells, and so on. (If in a location where there aren't any library tasks to perform, the automaton will make do with whatever's handy -- stacking rocks into tidy piles, putting weapons into alphabetical order, and so on.) After an hour, it reverts back to figurine size, and can't be used again until after a long rest. The Portable Librarian can't speak except to say "Shh."

71

Spellshard

A spellshard is a polished Eberron dragonshard, sized to fit into the palm of a hand. The shard is imbued with a particular work of literature. By holding the shard and concentrating, you can see its pages in your mind’s eye. Thinking of a particular phrase or topic will draw you to the first section that addresses it, and a simple ritual allows you to add content to the shard. A wizard can use a spellshard instead of a spellbook; the spellshard costs 1 gp per “page” in the shard, and otherwise functions as a mundane spellbook. Spellshards can also be used as diaries or journals. More advanced (and uncommon) shards can require a particular mental passphrase to access the contents of the shard.

72

Glamerparchment

This papyrus is imbued with cosmetic illusions, like letters that appear to dance across the page or illustrations that move like simple cartoons. (Think 1990s web pages.) The illusion must be contained to the surface of the page and is instantly recognizable as an illusory effect.

73

Engraving Quill

This quill can engrave messages onto any substance. But the message only last for a hour.

74

Grey Paste Pot

This pot of watery paste can be eaten, acting as both food and water, but tastes a little like ash. There's enough to satisfy the average human's nutritional needs for one day. It works fairly well as paste but will inevitably be nibbled by mice and other vermin. The pot magically refills with grey paste every night.

75

Library Box

When a non-magical book is placed inside it, another of the same type will be found there the next day. The copy is of slightly inferior quality compared to the original.

76

Brush of the Inner mind

A paint brush that allows the user to paint something with 100% accuracy that one person of their choice within 10 feet is thinking about. The painting is still based upon the performance roll of the user.

77

Smart Tablet

A small slate tablet has a button on the bottom that, when pressed, magically shows a chalk drawing of whatever is in front of it. Can only hold the one image. To take another picture, the tablet needs to be shaken.

78

Yellow Quill

This quill, made from a brightly colored yellow feather plucked from some exotic bird, never runs out of ink. However, the ink is the same shade of high-intensity yellow.

79

Never Ripe Scroll

This scroll is made from vellum that is just a little bit too raw; it's soft and squishy to the touch. However, it can never be ripped, torn, or burned by non-magical means.

80

Talking Parchment

This parchment seems normal. However, after you've finished writing on it, it will read aloud in a very loud voice what you've written on it. If you draw something on it, it describes what you've drawn. The voice is very annoying and reads or describes everything in a condescending, melodramatic, or mocking tone. After an hour, the writing fades and it's blank again.

81

Quill of Scroll Scribing

(Requires attunement) This quill has Roll 5d10 charges. Scribing a scroll with the quill consumes charges equal to the level of the spell scribed. The caster level of the scroll is increased by +1. Once the charges are depleted, it becomes a worn-out non-magical quill.

82

Compass Quills

This pair of matched feathers will always point toward each other, no matter how far apart they are. (A longer explanation can be found here.)

83

Quill of the Cipher

When using this outlandishly large quill, you are actually writing two messages: one that can be read by anyone, and another that can be read only by the person holding the quill. A creature with Truesight can read the hidden message.

84

Handy Quill

When using this quill, you can write with your non-dominant hand as if you were using your dominant hand. Commissioned by a rebellious poet after a king ordered his hand chopped off for his insolent writings.

85

Yad of Comprehension

This silver pointer is tipped with a tiny hand, its index finger extended. When used as a pointer while reading aloud, the text, even if in an unknown language, can be understood by the reader and by anyone listening, as if it was written in a language they speak fluently, as per the Comprehend Languages spell.

86

Quill of Thesaurus

A writing quill that when used, the words of the text will periodically change to synonyms of the original text while unobserved.

87

Origami Oriole

When the command word is spoken, this orange parchment will fold itself up into an origami bird and fly to the designated recipient, provided he or she is on the same plane as the sender. The "bird" flies at the approximate speed of a living bird -- say about 20 miles an hour -- but never needs to eat or rest. The recipient can write a message on the same parchment, speak the command word, and the bird will fly back to the original sender (or to a new recipient). If the paper is torn, crumpled, or soaked with water, the poor thing will keep trying to fold itself into a deformed bird capable of flying only a few feet before crashing, until someone puts it out of its misery by destroying it completely.

88

Giant's Quill

This enormous quill, made from an Aarakocra feather, was the favorite of the great Cloud Giant poet Clodosa Cirrus. It's quite difficult for any creature of a size smaller than Huge to wield. Anything written with this quill can only be read while in a cloud of fog or mist.

89

The Index of Everything

A normal looking book that contains information on the whereabouts of every book, parchment, or note belonging to the study/library, in alphabetical order. The information on the location are continuously updated and precise as long as the object and the book are in the same room; if something is taken from the room, the book will indicate that it's in possession of the one who took it. The paper must have a title written on it to appear on the book.

Wondrous Bookmark

This tasseled bookmark can never fall out of the book it is placed into; it must be physically removed by a person with the intent to move it. If a word, phrase, or page number is spoken aloud, the tassel will hover, snakelike, for a moment, then dive into the book, indicating the page with the first occurrence of that word or phrase, or the page number cited. If the word or phrase is spoken again, it will move to the next occurrence.

Tome of Wisdom

This weighty, ancient-looking volume is one of a set of 26 encyclopedias (determine which letter randomly). It can be read like a normal book, but more interestingly, when asked a question, the book will answer. However, it only knows about the subjects contained in its pages. Ask the "F" volume about the world's largest body of water, for example, and it will provide much information about the world's largest fjord.

Folded Reality

This stout sheet of paper, if folded into a shape, can become it! When the sheet is folded, and a command word spoken, it animates into that item, whether it be an animal (beasts only), an item (non-magical), or a structure. It's still the size of what you can make out of a sheet of normal-sized paper, however, and it's still made out of paper. It remains in that shape for an hour, once per day, then unfolds itself and returns to being a sheet of paper. A paper tiger will prowl about, stalking anything smaller than a mouse; a paper crossbow can fire toothpick "bolts"; a hut can serve as shelter for a Tiny creature. Remember, though, it's still paper, and capable of being ripped, burned, or waterlogged. Any damage suffered, whether as a sheet or as an animal, item, or structure, is not repaired when it transforms, and thus the "workable" size of the sheet may be reduced over time.

93

Paperweight of Concealment

This rather boring looking paperweight can be placed on a pile of papers, rendering them invisible. The papers will re-appear only if the paper weight is moved.

Parchment Tree

A bonsai tree that looks like a miniature deciduous tree, such as an oak, elm, ash, maple, or whatever is present in your world. Despite the small size of the tree itself, it produces broad, rounded leaves that are about the size as they would be on a full-sized tree. The tree produces 1D4 palm-sized leaves per day. If removed from the tree and allowed to dry, they turn pale in color, and can be written on as if parchment. However, it's still a leaf, and will rot away over a period of several months. Such parchment is prized by those who wish to ensure their writings do not out-live them.

95

Pen of Illumination

This bright white pen glows even in the dark, as does any message written with it. Any messages written with this pen glow softly in darkness, enabling it to be read. If the writing is used as a light source, it generates about as much illumination as moonlight.

96

Ink Slug

This small blob of a creature is about the size and shape of a fist. It crawls about slowly, leaving in its wake a slimy trail of indelible mucus. Like a chameleon, it can change the color of its skin to match its background. (Unlike a chameleon, however, its natural color is jet black.) Not only does the color of its skin change, but so does the color of its blood, as well as the mucus it leaves behind. Scribes who like to write in multiple colors place one of these slugs upon fabric of the appropriate color, then pierce its thin skin with the nib of a quill. The slugs evidently don't like this, as they're always trying to escape. But they're too slow to get very far, and they always leave a trail.

97

Rastrum of Orienteering

This rastrum looks something like a claw, the narrow implement branching in to a rake of five points that when inked one might draw parallel line on a surface. However an inscription on the back of a compass rose and a faint magical aura suggests another function. When preambled with the appropriate rite over a map made by a knowledgeable cartographer and focusing on a location marked on the map, the user of rastrum can summon five possible paths between two locations when a direct path might not be possible. The lines of the rastrum draws reassemble themselves to indicate paths of relative safety, convenience and speed.

98

Malakar's Maddening Organizer

A small clockwork creature, that when wound will do its best effort to organize paperwork and items. When wound it will operate 10 days before needing to be rewound, but has a 5% chance of misplacing an item requiring a DC 10 check to find.

99

Letter Unopener

This unassuming letter opener can be wielded as an improvised dagger, doing Roll 1d4-1 damage. More impressively, if touched to a sealed letter, the letter unopener will read aloud the message inside, without having to break the seal or open the envelope. It reads in whatever language the letter was written in (it doesn't translate).

Inkwell of Souls

This ancient inkwell, made of delicate crystal, contains the souls of writers -- once famous but now forgotten, their books long moldered away to dust. When the inkwell is uncapped, Roll 1d4+2 ghostly apparitions rise out and swirl around the room, offering advice on plot, grammar, and spelling. Alas, they have been dead for centuries; imagine getting spelling tips from Chaucer. The apparitions bicker endlessly amongst themselves about sentence structure and comma placement and that sort of thing. The only way to get them to shut up is to re-cap the inkwell; as it's sealed shut, they are sucked back inside, hollering reminders about the proper use of semi-colons as they go. If there is an ancient text nearby, inevitably one or more of the apparitions will claim to have known the author, and will offer valuable insights such as a humorous faux pas she once made at a party or whether he was cheating on his wife.
